How it's different from conventional (allopathic) medicine

Osteopathic medicine (DO) and allopathic medicine (MD) both aim to diagnose and treat illnesses, but they differ in their approach. DOs take a more holistic, patient-centered approach, considering the body’s structure and function as interconnected and emphasizing the body’s ability to heal itself. They use osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to address structural issues and enhance overall health.

MDs, on the other hand, focus more on treating specific diseases or symptoms, often through medications, surgery, and other conventional methods. While both DOs and MDs are trained to provide comprehensive medical care, DOs place a stronger emphasis on prevention, lifestyle management, and the body’s self-healing capabilities.

The Philosophy

In the forest

The Body is a unit.

The body is a unified whole, where the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected. Health and disease affect the entire person, not just isolated systems or organs.

Structure and function are interrelated.

The structure (anatomy) of the body and its function (physiology) are intimately connected. Any alteration in structure can affect function, and vice versa.

The body is capable of self-regulation.

The body has an inherent ability to heal itself and maintain balance, or homeostasis.

Rational treatment is based on these principles.

Osteopathic treatment involves considering these principles in diagnosing and treating patients, including the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to restore balance and support healing.

What is OMT?

It is a hands-on treatment used by osteopathic physicians (DOs) to diagnose, treat, and prevent a wide variety of medical conditions. OMT can be used to treat musculoskeletal issues like back pain, headaches, and joint problems, but it can also be applied to conditions like respiratory issues, digestive problems, and even chronic pain. Techniques may include stretching, gentle pressure, and controlled movements to improve alignment and overall function.
